About Us

It Started With One Question...

What if we actually did it?

Like a lot of families, we talked about taking a big road trip for years. It always sounded like something we'd do "someday." Someday when work slowed down. Someday when the timing was better. Someday when the kids were older.

Then we started asking ourselves a different question.

What if now is actually the best time?

Our kids were still young enough to be excited about every new place, every campground, every hike, and every wildlife sighting. We already homeschooled, so school wasn't holding us back. The window was open, but we knew it wouldn't stay that way forever. Before long, sports, jobs, and life would start pulling everyone in different directions.

We didn't want to wake up twenty years from now wondering what would have happened if we had just gone.

So we decided to find out.

A Crazy Idea... That Kept Making More Sense

The idea actually started with Kayla.

She had always dreamed of seeing more of the country together as a family. We'd spent years raising kids, working, and living normal busy lives, but there was still so much of America we had never experienced together.

Before committing to anything bigger, we took a ten-day road trip through the Redwoods and Crater Lake.

That trip changed everything.

It showed us what life on the road could look like and convinced us this wasn't just a fun vacation—it was something we genuinely wanted to pursue.

Kayla was all in from the beginning.

I... needed spreadsheets.

As an engineer, I'm wired to ask questions first. Could we afford it? Would the RV work? What about work? What happens if something breaks? I spent months researching everything from motorhomes and tow vehicles to electrical systems, camping costs, and travel routes. If there was a way to overthink it, I probably did.

Eventually we reached a point where the numbers made sense, the planning was done, and one realization kept coming back.

If we didn't try, we'd probably spend the rest of our lives wondering "what if?"

That sounded a lot worse than taking the chance.

Meet Our Family

We're just a regular family.

No trust fund.

No lottery ticket.

No secret formula.

Just a family willing to save, plan, work hard, and take a leap while the opportunity was there.

Mom

Kayla is the heart behind our adventures.

She loves discovering new places, creating memorable experiences, and somehow keeping five people organized on the road. Campsites, grocery lists, hiking plans, reservations, daily itineraries... if it's organized, there's a good chance she made it happen.

She also shares the stories behind our travels from a mom's perspective—the moments, memories, and lessons that don't always show up on a map.

Dad

I'm the one making sure we actually get there.

I'm an engineer by trade and a backyard mechanic by necessity. I enjoy figuring out how things work and making them work better. Whether it's modifying the RV, wiring electrical systems, maintaining the tow vehicle, or researching gear for weeks before buying it, I like solving problems.

When I'm outside, I'm happiest in the mountains.

Hiking has always been something I enjoy, but what really draws me outdoors is feeling like part of the landscape instead of simply looking at it. That's one reason hunting has become such a meaningful part of my life. It's a way to participate in nature rather than just observe it.

That's the perspective you'll find in Dad's Corner.

Why "Field to Ridge"?

Because our favorite adventures don't happen in just one place.

Sometimes they're in wide-open fields.

Sometimes they're high on a mountain ridge.

Sometimes they're found somewhere in between.

For us, Field to Ridge represents exploring the outdoors in all its forms—national parks, back roads, family campgrounds, mountain trails, fishing trips, hunting seasons, and all the unexpected moments that happen along the way.

Why We Share It

Originally, this website was simply a way to document our journey and keep friends and family updated while we traveled.

Somewhere along the way, it became something more.

We realized there are probably a lot of families like ours.

People who assume big adventures are only for people with unlimited money, endless vacation time, or perfectly curated social media lives.

That's not us.

We're ordinary people making intentional choices.

If our story encourages even one family to take the camping trip they've been putting off, visit that national park they've always wanted to see, or simply spend a little more time together outside, then sharing this journey is worth it.

Our Hope

More than anything, we hope our kids remember the feeling of adventure.

We hope they remember campfires, mountain sunrises, long drives, wrong turns, rainy hikes, flat tires, incredible views, and the thousands of little moments in between.

We hope they look back decades from now and realize these weren't just vacations.

They were the moments that shaped our family.

Thanks for following along with us.

We're glad you're here.
