A Perfect Summer Day in Crested Butte

A friend had recommended that we spend a day in Crested Butte, and after discovering the Wildflower Festival was happening during our stay, we decided to be spontaneous and check it out. We didn't have a packed itinerary or a long list of must-see attractions. We simply wanted to explore the town, enjoy the mountains, and see where the day would take us.

Nestled high in the Colorado mountains, Crested Butte immediately invited us to slow down. The colorful historic buildings, overflowing flower baskets, mountain views, and relaxed pace made it feel like the kind of town you could spend hours exploring without ever looking at the clock.

Looking back, I'm so glad we decided to make the trip. Between a beautiful mountain hike that reminded us of home, another coffee shop we'll definitely remember, a bookstore the kids could have spent hours exploring, wandering through downtown, and ending the afternoon with fresh fruit ice cream, it turned into one of those days we'll always look back on with a smile.

A Morning in the Mountains

We started our morning on Teddy's Trail, an easy loop just outside of town that winds through beautiful aspen groves and open mountain meadows. It didn't take long before we were reminded of home. While the scenery was different than Washington, there was something familiar about walking through the trees with mountains surrounding us. It felt peaceful and was the perfect way to start the day.

The trail was just the right length for our family. The kids climbed over rocks, looked for wildflowers, and stopped to investigate anything that caught their attention. There was no rush to get anywhere, and that made the hike even more enjoyable.

Exploring Judd Falls

After finishing Teddy's Trail, everyone was still full of energy, so we decided to head over to Judd Falls.

The trail to the falls follows a wide dirt path that gradually climbs through the forest. It isn't a difficult hike, making it another great option for families looking to experience the beauty around Crested Butte without taking on a long or strenuous trek.

As we continued along the trail, the sound of the waterfall slowly grew louder until we finally caught our first glimpse through the trees. Tucked beneath the surrounding mountain peaks, Judd Falls was a beautiful reward at the end of the hike. We spent a few minutes enjoying the cool mountain air, listening to the rushing water, and taking in the scenery before heading back down the trail.

Looking back, I loved pairing Teddy's Trail with Judd Falls. Teddy's Trail gave us open meadows, mountain views, and wildflowers, while Judd Falls offered the peaceful feeling of hiking through the forest to a beautiful waterfall. Together, they made for the perfect morning in Crested Butte.

A Great Cup of Coffee

After our hikes, we were more than ready for a little break, so we stopped at Camp 4 Coffee. One thing we've started doing on this trip is keeping a running list of our favorite coffee shops, and Camp 4 easily earned a spot on it. We grabbed our drinks, the kids enjoyed a snack, and for a little while we simply sat and relaxed before heading into town.

Exploring Downtown Crested Butte

One of my favorite parts of the day wasn't something we planned. It was simply wandering through downtown Crested Butte. We strolled along Elk Avenue without much of a plan, popping into whatever shops caught our attention.

Townie Books was one of the best bookstores we've found on our trip. The kids could have spent hours exploring every corner, pulling books off the shelves and discovering new stories.

We also wandered through one of the local art galleries, taking our time looking at paintings inspired by the surrounding mountains and wildflowers.

The Perfect Ending

Before heading back to camp, we made one last stop at Chill K Creamery. Fresh fruit is blended right into creamy vanilla ice cream while you watch, creating one of the freshest desserts we've had anywhere on our trip. By the time everyone's ice cream was finished, we had sampled each other's flavors, debated which fruit was the best, and agreed this was the perfect way to end the afternoon.

Looking Back

When I think about our day in Crested Butte, I don't think about checking hikes or shops off a list. I remember the quiet trails through the aspens, the sound of Judd Falls before we could even see it, a coffee shop we'll definitely stop at again, the kids getting completely lost in a bookstore, walking through downtown with nowhere we needed to be, and finishing the day with fresh fruit ice cream while talking about which flavor deserved to win. Sometimes the days we remember most aren't the busiest ones. They're the ones where we slow down, enjoy being together, and let the day unfold one adventure at a time. Crested Butte gave us exactly that, and it's a place we'll gladly return to someday.
