Happy Birthday Hudson

Nine Years Old on the Road

Some birthdays are big because of where you celebrate.

Others become unforgettable because of who you celebrate with.

This year, Hudson turned 9 somewhere in the middle of our year-long adventure across the country — living out of an RV, surrounded by campgrounds, desert landscapes, and whatever town happened to be nearby that day.

And honestly?

It ended up being one of our favorite days of the trip so far.

Birthday Morning Starts With Donuts

Hudson with his donuts and special birthday drink!

No alarm clocks.
No rushing to school.
No giant party schedule.

Just a slow campground morning and one very excited 9-year-old.

We kicked off the birthday celebration with donuts from Safeway, which instantly made the morning feel special. There’s just something about birthday donuts that feels like childhood.

Chocolate frosting everywhere (or as Hudson’s favorite (apple fritter).
Sprinkles falling into the seats of the 4runner, ( hehehehe don’t tell dad)
Kids laughing.

A pretty solid start to turning nine.

Dutch Bro Stops and Birthday Drinks

After donuts, we made another important birthday stop: Dutch Bros for a special drink.

One of the fun things about road life is how even simple outings feel different in new places. Every town has its own little coffee shops, different people, different views outside the window.

And for one morning, sitting there together with drinks in hand, it felt less like travel and more like simply enjoying life at a slower pace.

Baseball Cards and Target Adventures

Hudson with his baseball cards from the Slayton’s

If you have kids, you already know:

Sometimes Target becomes an event.

Especially on your birthday.

We spent part of the day wandering the aisles looking for baseball cards, birthday treats, and a few things we probably didn’t technically need for the RV.

But birthdays on the road don’t have to be extravagant to feel meaningful.

Sometimes excitement looks like:

  • picking out baseball cards

  • exploring store aisles

  • finding snacks for later

  • a new pair of sunglasses

  • carrying birthday treasures back to the campsite

And judging by the smile on his face, the baseball cards may have been one of the highlights of the entire day.

Back at Camp

The best part of the day may have been how simple everything felt afterward.

Back at the campground, the kids ran around and played while we slowed down for the evening. No complicated plans. No packed schedule.

Just family time.

Hudson’s new In and Out Shirt

We had a special birthday lunch, sang “Happy Birthday” around camp, and spent the afternoon soaking in another day of this strange and beautiful road life we’re living right now.

There’s something really special about celebrating milestones while traveling.

Birthdays feel less focused on “stuff” and more focused on moments.

More time together.
More laughter.
More memories attached to places.

Birthday Dinner at In-N-Out Burger

In and Out for Hudson’s Birthday Dinner!

To finish off the day, we headed to In-N-Out for birthday dinner — which, according to our birthday boy, was absolutely the correct decision.

Burgers.
Fries.
Milkshakes.
Three tired kids.
One very happy 9-year-old.

Not fancy.

Not overplanned.

Just good food and another memory added to this year together.

A Birthday We’ll Probably Talk About Forever

Someday, years from now, I doubt he’ll remember every gift he got when he was nine.

But I think he’ll remember this birthday.

The donuts.
The baseball cards.
The campground.
The burgers.
The feeling of waking up somewhere new with his family beside him.

And honestly, that’s one of the biggest reasons we left home for this trip in the first place.

Not to create perfect days.

Just meaningful ones.
