July 4th Celebration

Celebrating the Fourth of July in Moab, Utah

After spending two incredible days exploring Arches National Park, we were excited to experience something completely different—Fourth of July in Moab, Utah.

We had heard Moab puts on a great celebration, but we had no idea just how much this little town embraces Independence Day. It turned out to be one of our favorite days of the trip so far.

A Small-Town Fourth of July

We started the morning by finding a spot along Main Street for the Fourth of July parade. There was already a buzz in the air as people set up lawn chairs, kids waved flags, and everyone chatted while waiting for the parade to begin. It had that small-town feeling that instantly makes you feel welcome, even if you're just passing through.

Once the parade started, the excitement only grew. Floats rolled by one after another, local businesses tossed handfuls of candy into the crowd, and our kids couldn't run fast enough to scoop it all up before the next float came through. Every few minutes someone would hand out popsicles, which couldn't have come at a better time in the July heat. Between the music, laughter, waving flags, and smiling faces, it felt like the kind of Fourth of July celebration you picture when you think of small-town America.

Downtown Moab

After the parade wrapped up, we wandered through downtown Moab. We stopped by the local bookstore and spent some time browsing the shelves before walking around the rest of downtown. The streets were full of people enjoying the holiday, shops had their doors open, and there was an energy that made you want to slow down and simply take it all in. It was busy without feeling overwhelming, and everywhere we looked families were making memories together.

Instead of eating out for lunch, we packed our own and headed over to the Grand County Fair. It ended up being the perfect way to spend the afternoon.

An Afternoon at the Grand County Fair

The very first thing Lincoln spotted was the rodeo. The second he realized it was happening, his eyes lit up, and there was no question where we were headed first. We found a place to watch as the cowboys roped cattle and rode horses, and he was completely glued to the action. Every event had him smiling, pointing, and asking questions. When it came time to explore the rest of the fair, he wasn't ready to leave. If it had been up to him, we probably would have stayed and watched the rodeo all afternoon.

Eventually, we convinced him there was more to see, and the rest of the fair definitely didn't disappoint. We checked out the classic car show, wandered through the food vendors, and let the kids enjoy the water activities set up to help everyone cool off. Macie was especially excited when she discovered the fire truck spraying a giant stream of water over the crowd. She ran right into it with a huge smile on her face, laughing as the cool water splashed over everyone standing nearby. It was the perfect way to beat the July heat.

It was another reminder that sometimes the best experiences aren't the famous attractions—they're the community events that give you a glimpse into what life is like for the people who actually live there.

We spent most of the afternoon at the fair before heading over to Swanny City Park.

Cooling Off at Swanny Park

If you're visiting Moab with kids, Swanny City Park is a wonderful place to take a break. With large grassy areas, mature shade trees, playground equipment, picnic tables, and plenty of room to run, it offers a peaceful escape from the desert heat. After a busy day, it was exactly what we needed. The kids ran around, played, and burned off what little energy they somehow still had left while we enjoyed sitting in the shade for a while.

Dinner at Canyon Pizza Co.

By dinner time, we were all hungry, so we made our way to Canyon Pizza Co.

If you're looking for pizza in Moab, I definitely recommend giving it a try. They serve handcrafted pizzas with a variety of toppings, and they also offer gluten-free crusts. Since I eat gluten-free, I ordered one for myself, and honestly, it was one of the best gluten-free pizzas I've ever had. Finding really good gluten-free food while traveling can sometimes be a challenge, so this meal was a huge win. The rest of the family loved their pizzas too, and by the time we finished, we all left with full bellies and happy smiles.

Fireworks Over Moab

As evening approached, we headed back to Swanny Park to claim a spot for the fireworks show. While we waited, the kids played frisbee and catch in the grass, making the most of the cooler evening temperatures. Those quiet moments before the fireworks started were some of my favorite parts of the day. There was no schedule to keep, nowhere else to be, and everyone was simply enjoying being together.

As darkness settled over Moab, the first fireworks lit up the sky.

Burst after burst reflected across the faces of families gathered throughout the park, and for the next several minutes everyone looked up together in awe. It was the perfect ending to an already unforgettable day.

As we packed up our blankets and walked back to the RV that night, we couldn't help but smile. We had spent the day catching candy at the parade, exploring downtown, cheering at the rodeo, cooling off at the fair, eating amazing pizza, and ending the night under a sky full of fireworks.

It wasn't a day filled with big hikes or famous landmarks, but it ended up being one of our favorite days in Moab. Sometimes the best memories come from simply joining a community's celebration and enjoying the little moments together as a family.
